Wonder Pets: More Drama than Shakespeare?

Wonder Pets! (from thepartyworks.com)

Wonder Pets! is a show that airs on Nick Jr., but we, of course, watch it on Netflix. By we, I mean the girls and the dog; I’m usually trying to take a cat nap before someone asks me for juice or another cookie. Yesterday, though, I was wide awake, and my baby wanted me to watch it with her. My little one definitely has a flair for the dramatic, but I didn’t know just how much until last night. I must say, though, that Wonder Pets! adds to the affectation quite a bit.

First of all, the songs are theatrical. A hamster, chick (at least, I think that’s what it is), and a turtle are chilling doing regular pet stuff when we hear a ringing sound.

The phone, the phone is ringing. My daughter gasps as if she’s never heard this before. “Oh, no, Mommy! It’s ringing! They gotta get the phone!”

There’s an animal in trouble. “WHAT!” she screams. Yes, she actually yelled this. “Who’s in trouble, Mommy?”

“I don’t know. I’ve never seen this before, D.”

This is sewious. “Oh my goodness! Mommy, MOMMY! This is so sewious.” She’s literally holding her breath now, and I’m starting to wonder if she’s ever really watched an episode of this before. Her eyes are wide open, her hands are clasped over her mouth, and her body is rigid. I want to laugh, but she’s really putting on a show here, a sewious show.

What’s gonna work? Team work. “Mommy, they gotta work together. They can’t save him. They need team work, okay?”

“Okay, baby.”

Of course, the “animal in trouble” is saved by the collective efforts of the three pets.

“D.” I say. “It’s time to clean up your room.”

“NNNOOO!” she yells. “I don’t want to do that.”

“What’s gonna work?” I sing, hoping to inspire her to pick up something.

“I don’t like teamwork.” She pouts and pretends to cry.
