Memos from the Middle

Smack-Dab in the Middle of Living

Inadequate Praise

When I woke up,
I didn’t take time
to appreciate the breaths
that effortlessly escaped my lips.
I didn’t marvel
at the ability
to see my own reflection
in the mirror,
nor did I gasp
in gratitude
when I heard the chirping
of the birds.
I didn’t smile contentedly
when I stepped one foot
in front
of the other,
feeling the soft carpet
under my feet.
When food traveled
to an empty stomach,
I didn’t rejoice,
and I didn’t cry
out joyously
as I thought
about the upcoming day.
I didn’t even pause
to consider
that I could even think
at all
without help.

But Lord,
how marvelous it is
that you loved me enough
to bless me
despite my neglect!

And for that,
and everything else
that you have done,
I say,

“Thank you!”

Thank you for reminding me of just how inadequate my praise really is!

    • Thank you for admitting our truth to yourself, and thank you in advance for seeking to change that inadequacy every day from now on. I pray that we endeavor to walk a little closer each day.
